All the pre-registration programmes for chiropodists and podiatrists that we currently approve include modules which cover this area. Students successfully completing these programmes will be eligible to apply for registration on the relevant part of the Register, with the local anaesthetic entitlement annotated.
We also approve a small number of stand-alone programmes which can be taken by chiropodists and podiatrists post-registration, to gain the entitlement. These stand-alone programmes are normally intended for individuals who wish to expand their scope of practice in this area but trained before local anaesthetics became a part of pre-registation education.
An education provider wishing to offer a stand-alone programme in local anaesthetics will need to seek approval for their programme. This will entail an approval visit and assessment against the standards of education and training (excluding SET 1: Level of qualification for entry to the Register) and the relevant standard of proficiency (within 2b.4), which states:
Registrants must:
be able to use a systemic approach to formulate and test a preferred diagnosis, including being able to:
- apply local anaesthesia techniques
