Voluntary register transfer
On 1 July 2009, we opened the Register to practitioner psychologists.
On this date, relevant members of the British Psychological Society (BPS) and members of the Association of Educational Psychologists (AEP) were automatically transferred to the Health Professions Council Register.
We anticipate the majority of registration records to appear on the online Register shortly after this date, with the rest to follow in the coming weeks. This is because the data was transferred to us on 1 July 2009 and is currently being verified and prepared
Who was transferred?
- British Psychological Society (BPS)
Holders of BPS practising certificates who are or have been full members of one or more of the BPS divisions relating to the seven domains (see below).
- Division of Clinical Psychology - Division of Counselling Psychology - Division of Educational and Child Psychology - Scottish Division of Educational Psychology - Division of Forensic Psychology - Division of Health Psychology - Division of Occupational Psychology - Division of Sport and Exercise Psychology
- Association of Educational Psychologists (AEP)
Full members of the AEP and affiliate members who have been full members of the AEP at any time during the two year period immediately prior to the opening of the Register.
What will happen after the transfer?
When you come on to the HPC Register, a ‘record’ is created with information about you and about your registration. The HPC will not use this information for any purpose other than to contact you about your registration. In particular, the HPC never sell their lists to anyone who might want to contact you for marketing purposes.
You will shorlty appear on the HPC’s online Register which will only show the general geographical location of your address. The dates shown on the online Register are the dates of your current registration cycle.
The online register is updated in real-time, which means that as registration advisors update your entry, the online register is updated at the same time. It is the most reliable and up-to-date source of information about your registration, and you are encouraged you to use it, and to point employers and others towards it when they need proof of registration.
Each profession the HPC regulates has its own registration cycle which is normally made up of two ‘professional years’. However, following a consultation, the first renewal cycle for practitioner psychologists will be 19 months long rather than two years, so that subsequent renewal of registration takes place in a relatively quieter period. This will mean that the HPC will be able to provide a more efficient service to those renewing their registration.
The first renewal cycle will run from 1 November 2009 to 31 May 2011. A pro- rata fee of £120 will be payable for this period. On 1 August 2009, the HPC will write to you again to ask if you want to renew your registration. You will also be given information about your payment options. You will then have three months in which to renew your registration and pay your renewal fees.
Once you have renewed your registration, the HPC will send you a certificate. Your certificate is printed with your name, registration number, the dates of your registration, and the protected title (or titles) that you are entitled to use. It does not show your qualifications, it shows that you are on the HPC Register and that you meet their standards.
Should you have any questions about your registration with the HPC, please contact their Registration Department. The Registration team can be contacted Monday to Friday, 8am to 6pm on the lo-call number 0845 300 4472 or 44 (0)20 7840 9802. You can also email registration@hpc-uk.org
