Grandparenting info

The new HPC register opened on July 9th 2003. Grandparenting applications (for the 12 original professions) were accepted from this date until July 8th 2005.

Due to recent changes in legislation, common professional titles like ‘chiropodist’ and ‘physiotherapist’ are now protected by law. (For a full list of protected titles click here ) Anyone who uses a protected title must register with the HPC.

The usual route to registration with the HPC is via an approved course (see below for a list of approved courses). However, the legislation which created the HPC also contained provision for unregistered professionals who have not taken an approved course, to apply for admission to the register provided that they meet certain criteria. This route to registration, which is only open for two years, is called ‘Grandparenting’. After July 8th 2005, the only route onto the Register for people trained in the UK will be to take an approved course.

We received a large number of Grandparenting applications just prior to the July 9th deadline. The Grandparenting team are currently processing these application forms but some applicants may not yet be listed on the on-line register. If you think someone is registered but they are not appearing on the register, please phone the Grandparenting department on 0845 3004 472. If an applicant is rejected by the HPC, they must stop using a protected title, whilst we are processing their application, they can continue to use the protected title.

The large volume of applications received prior to the July 9th deadline has resulted in a longer processing time for applications than we would like. We would ask that applicants please bear with us during this busy period as we strive to continue to provide the level of service you would expect from HPC.
