Consultation on the statutory regulation of psychotherapists and counsellors14/07/2009 - 16/10/2009 This consultation has now closed. You can download a copy of the consultation responses document below.
At its meeting on 10 December 2009, the Council discussed the responses to the consultation and agreed a number of conclusions. You can read a copy of the conclusions paper discussed by the Council by clicking here.
We are consulting on the recommendations of the Psychotherapists and Counsellors Professional Liaison Group (PLG) about the potential statutory regulation of psychotherapists and counsellors.
In February 2007, the Government published a White Paper on the future of regulation, 'Trust, Assurance and Safety - The Regulation of Health Professionals in the 21st Century'. The White Paper said that the Government was planning to introduce statutory regulation for psychotherapists and counsellors.
We set up a working group of stakeholders known as a Professional Liaison Group or PLG to consider and make recommendations to the HPC Council about how psychotherapists and counsellors might be regulated, in light of the conclusions made in the White Paper.
There are three consultation documents. These are:
- The consultation paper including consultation questions.
- The report from the psychotherapists and counsellors PLG.
- The draft standards of proficiency for psychotherapists and counsellors.
You can download copies of the consultation documents below.
