Consultation on criteria for approving approved mental health professionals in England

21/01/2013 - 19/04/2013

This consultation is now closed. You can download a document summarising the responses we received to the consultation and our decisions below.

We have now published the approval criteria for approved mental health professional (AMHP) programmes. The criteria become effective on 1st September 2013. You can find the criteria here.

We consulted on criteria that we will use to approve Approved Mental Health Professional (AMHP) Programmes in England.

AMHPs exercise functions under the Mental Health Act 1983. Those functions relate to decisions made about individuals with mental health disorders, including the decision to apply for compulsory admission to hospital for an individual. Social workers, mental health and learning disabilities nurses, occupational therapists and practitioner psychologists, registered with their respective regulator, can train to become AMHPs. Before working as an AMHP, a professional needs to complete appropriate training and be approved by a Local Social Services Authority in England.

We have powers to approve AMHP programmes. The approvals process involves an approval visit and initial decision about whether a programme meets our standards.  There is more information about the approvals process here.

With AMHP programmes, we will be deciding whether the programme meets the criteria we have set. The criteria have two parts:

  • The first part sets out our expectations of the processes and systems that education providers delivering AMHP training should have in place to manage the programme.
  • The second part sets out the knowledge and skills we expect an AMHP to have when they complete the programme, to ensure that they meet the necessary competencies required for the role.
