About Us

We are a regulator, and we were set up to protect the public. To do this, we keep a register of health professionals who meet our standards for their training, professional skills, behaviour and health.

Registrants 5 We currently regulate 13 health professions: Arts therapists, Biomedical scientists, Chiropodists/podiatrists, Clinical scientists, Dietitians, Occupational therapists, Operating department practitioners, Orthoptists, Paramedics, Physiotherapists, Prosthetists/orthotists, Radiographers, Speech and language therapists

All of these professions have at least one professional title that is protected by law, including those shown above. This means, for example, that anyone using the titles 'physiotherapist' or 'dietitian' must be registered with us.

It is a criminal offence for someone to claim that they are registered with us when they are not, or to use a protected title that they are not entitled to use. We will prosecute people who commit these crimes.
Council meeting 4 Our Council is responsible for developing strategies and policies and consists of 26 members (made up of one representative from each of the professions regulated and 13 lay members) plus a president. In addition, the HPC runs committees which help the Council with its work.
Registrants 7 If a health professional does not meet our standards, we can take action which might include stopping them from practising. This means that if you are unhappy with treatment you are given, or worried about the behaviour or health of a registrant, you can always raise your concerns with us.
