About Us

We are a regulator, and we were set up to protect the public. To do this, we keep a register of health professionals who meet our standards for their training, professional skills, behaviour and health.

		We currently regulate 15 health professions: arts therapists, biomedical scientists, chiropodists / podiatrists, clinical scientists, dietitians, hearing aid dispensers, occupational therapists, operating department practitioners, orthoptists, paramedics, physiotherapists, practitioner psychologists, prosthetists / orthotists, radiographers, and speech and language therapists. All of these professions have at least one professional title that is protected by law, including those shown above. This means, for example, that anyone using the titles 'physiotherapist' or 'dietitian' must be registered with us. It is a criminal offence for someone to claim that they are registered with us when they are not, or to use a protected title that they are not entitled to use. We will prosecute people who commit these crimes.
		Our Council develops and monitors strategy and policy and consists of 20 members (made up of 10 registrant and 10 lay members), including the Chair. In addition, the HPC runs committees which help the Council with its work.
		If a health professional does not meet our standards, we can take action which might include stopping them from practising. This means that if you are unhappy with treatment you are given, or worried about the behaviour or health of a registrant, you can always raise your concerns with us.
		As an organisation, our aim is to make sure that we always provide the best quality of service for all our stakeholders. To help us achieve this aim our Quality System was set up. Our Quality Management System is registered with BSI to ISO 9001:2008
