Professions

We currently regulate 14 health professions, click on each profession for more details:

Arts therapists, biomedical scientists, chiropodists/podiatrists, clinical scientists, dietitians, occupational therapists, operating department practitioners, orthoptists, paramedics, physiotherapists, practitioner psychologists, prosthetists & orthotists, radiographers, speech & language therapists.



Arts therapists

An art, music or drama therapist encourages people to express their feelings and emotions through art, such as painting and drawing, music or drama.

Biomedical scientists

A biomedical scientist analyses specimens from patients to provide data to help doctors diagnose and treat disease.

Chiropodists / podiatrists

A chiropodist / podiatrist diagnoses and treats disorders, diseases and deformities of the feet.

Clinical scientists

A clinical scientist oversees specialist tests for diagnosing and managing disease. They advise doctors on using tests and interpreting data and they also carry out research to understand diseases

Dietitians

A dietitian uses the science of nutrition to devise eating plans for patients to treat medical conditions They also work to promote good health by helping to facilitate a positive change in food ch

Occupational therapists

An occupational therapist uses specific activities to limit the effects of disability and promote independence in all aspects of daily life.

Operating department practitioners

Operating department practitioners participate in the assessment of the patient prior to surgery and provide individualised care.

Orthoptists

An orthoptist specialises in diagnosing and treating visual problems involving eye movement and alignment

Paramedics

Paramedics provide specialist care and treatment to patients who are either acutely ill or injured. They can administer a range of drugs and carry out certain surgical techniques.

Physiotherapists

Physiotherapists deal with human function and movement and help people to achieve their full physical potential. They use physical approaches to promote, maintain and restore wellbeing.

Practitioner psychologists

Psychology is the scientific study of people, the mind and behaviour. Psychologists attempt to understand the role of mental functions in individual and social behaviour.
